Summary/Abstract
This study analyzes the impacts of climate change on food systems and the animal agriculture sector specifically. The study “analyze[d] more than 320 million daily observations of milk production across 12 years, paired with survey data, to provide estimates of the effect of humid heat and the scope for adaptation.” It concluded that extreme heat reduces milk yield by up to 10%, with cows at more productive stages experiencing greater effects from the heat. The study also found that cooling infrastructure that has been adopted over the last twenty years has not fully mitigated the losses in production.
