The Role of Anthropogenic Forcing in Western United States Hydroclimate Extremes

Summary/Abstract

This study examines the observed “precipitation roller coaster” in western US states and measures the hydroclimatic intensity (HYINT) using an index. The study focuses on attribution of the 2021 extreme hydroclimatic intensity. It concludes that the “2021 extreme HYINT event was largely attributable to the combined impacts of precipitation intensity and [dry spell length] in California and Utah, with precipitation intensity playing a more important role.”
